Sign the petition: bring the water industry into public ownership!

As long-time supporters of Windrush Against Sewage Pollution (WASP), the volunteer group who have been investigating, and exposing, the sewage scandal since 2017, we are encouraging everyone to sign the petition to “Hold a referendum to bring the water industry into public ownership”.

Following the recent airing of Dirty Business, Ashley Smith, Founder & Chair of Trustees of WASP, has launched a petition to “Hold a binding national referendum on whether the water industry should be returned to public ownership. Water is a basic human necessity; we believe our privatised system has failed, so the public should decide who owns and controls it.” Read more and sign the petition here.

Channel 4’s factual drama Dirty Business follow’s WASP’s Ash Smith (played by David Thewlis) and Peter Hammond (played by Jason Watkins) as they notice that their local patch of the River Windrush in the Cotswolds is becoming polluted. It’s a must watch! Whilst WASP is Oxfordshire based, their relentless work in researching, analysing and exposing water company pollution and regulatory performance is having a national impact. We support this next step, please sign the petition to hold a referendum to bring the water industry into public ownership.

Back in 2023, inspired by WASP’s work, Tony wrote Stop all the locks, a poem about river pollution. The video to support the poem features some WASP footage. You can watch and listen to Tony’s poem on our blog here.
